Brussels.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10

Last weekend, my adventures continued in Brussels, Belgium. Oh what a delightful place with chocolate and waffles galore! Not only was this weekend full of friendship and exploring, but of extreme sadness. Little did we know that shortly after beginning this exciting weekend, we would get a breaking news alert that there was a terrorist attack not far from us.

We arrived in Brussels on Friday afternoon and headed off to our Festive Flat, where we would be staying for the weekend. It was indeed festive! Our apartment was only one block from the Grand Place so we immediately began to explore this gorgeous city. The first thing I noticed was that instead of boutiques and souvenir stores lining every street, there were chocolate shops EVERYWHERE. In between the chocolate shops were waffle shops… Belgian waffles are even better in Belgium.

After a delightful evening in Brussels, we returned home to our Festive Flat and immediately received a breaking news alert that there had been an attack in Paris. We were in shock. The first thing that came to mind was one of my dear friends studying in Paris, who thankfully is safe! As we sat there staring at our phones, alert after alert began to pop up. We were in disbelief and then realized how close we were to the French border. We didn’t get much sleep that night, because we were anxious as to what was next, so for hours we stared at our phones and refreshed our news apps.

The next day, we continued to explore Brussels, but the horrible sadness haunted us throughout the day. Thankfully, we were still able to see a lot of Brussels and eat some more waffles!

That evening we got the alert that there were police raids in Brussels due to terrorists having come from there. Talk about frightening… but thankfully, we serve a God who is stronger than any evil man. No one, not even ISIS can separate us from our perfect Father. This world can be a terrifying place, but the One who created this world is madly in love with us and is with us every step of the way. And to that I will cling during these days.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
